Carpentry- The Bar

The other half of my work for The Siegel was designing and building the only constructed scenic element to the show- the bar. The primary concern was to design it such that it hid the couch used for the final scene of the show, which was easily done (bars being large objects and all), but the more challenging aspect was fitting the desired size of the bar into a smaller budget, considering the increased lumber prices resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design Concept

In an effort to make the bar fall within the budget, I ended up primarily using damaged goods from my lumber supplier, and then hiding the damage with cheap materials such as 1x6 for the trim.

The bar needed to be movable, to reveal the final scene’s furniture, and so was mounted on large casters I got on a discount, which allowed for me to shorten the heavier, more expensive lumber stock and save even more of the budget.

The final result came out looking great, within budget, and accomplishing its tasks at both hiding scenery and serving as a perfectly functioning bar.
